Make Happy the Winged Wench

Last night the Publishing Fairy dropped by to give me grief about how I've been too busy writing to pay any attention to her. I explained that this month I'm ghost-writing and NaNo'ing at the same time, but she thought those were lousy excuses. One day I'd like to see her try. Anyway, to appease her (and prevent her from cursing my WIPs) I'm giving her today's post and the chance to grant a BookWish* for one of my readers.

If you'd like to be the one for whom the wand waves, in comments to this post name a book you've just read that you really enjoyed (or if you haven't read anything enjoyable recently, just toss your name in the hat) by midnight EST Monday, November 10th, 2014. I'll choose one name at random from everyone who participates and grant the winner a BookWish. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet EXCEPT Keita (involves NaNoWriMo blackmail, ha), even if you've won something here at PBW in the past.

*A BookWish is any book of the winner's choice available for order online and that costs up to a maximum of $30.00 U.S. dollars (I'll cover any additional shipping costs involved.)

  1. I've been enjoying a Eugie Foster kick lately. First I read The King of Rabbits and Moon Lake, which is a lovely collection of fairy tales for all ages. It didn't overtake Returning My Sister's Face in my affections, but Returning My Sister's Face is the only short story collection to date where I love every single story in it. Since Foster wrote a wide range in terms of tone that's quite a feat.
After that I tracked down her Nebula winning novelette Sinner, Baker, Fabulist, Priest; Red Mask, Black Mask, Gentleman, Beast; it's an excellent dystopian story that makes packing a thought provoking, well-realized world into short format seem easy. I can see why it won the Nebula.
I just finished A Vampire Quintet, which is a dark fantasy collection that is a fabulously imaginative batch of vampire stories. It includes a wonderfully dark twist on Sleeping Beauty. The only sad thing is that with her premature death earlier this year there won't be anymore new stories from her.

I read Six Months later, a novel about a teenage girl who suddenly forgets the past six months. It was much more complex than your typical I-woke-up-in-the-hospital-amnesia story. For one thing, she isn't in a car accident. And her new life is perfect: she's dating the boy she's always had a crush on and now has amazing grades. I loved the twist in the story.

  4. I just finished reading Mr. Monster by Dan Wells. Pretty good though very dark...

Not a typical read for me but this book, and Dan's previous I Am Not a Serial Killer, are helping me with how I structure my stories. I wanted to see how Dan does it.

No need to enter me in the draw.
    Thanks for all you do.

  5. I've finished rereading Lock In by John Scalzi. It's one of his best books by far. It's also one of the few books that I finished reading and immediately read again. Yummy!

(Please remove this comment if it's a duplicate. I don't know if the original one went through. Thanks!)

  19. I just finished reading Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold. I bought it Saturday and finished it this morning. I hadn't realized how much I missed her stuff. I swear she could write a novel a week and I still wouldn't get enough.

And no, I wasn't avoiding writing, nope, not me. Really... I wasn't...

I just finished The Paper Magician by Charlie Holmberg. Was waiting on pins and needles for the sequel to come out. Snagged it yesterday and am thoroughly enjoying it so far. (The sequel is called The Glass Magician). It is quite an interesting twist on traditional magic systems!
