In Lieu of a Post

I had a lousy day yesterday, and I'm not happy with the post I had written to appear today, so to bail me out (again) I've summoned the Publishing Fairy, who has taken pity on me and agreed to give someone who stops in here today a book that they want (she's such a pushover.)

If you'd like to be that someone, in comments to this post name a book or author that makes you happy (or if you can't think of one, just toss your name in the magic hat) by midnight EST tonight, September 12, 2012. I'll draw one name at random from everyone who participates and grant the winner a BookWish*. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something here at PBW in the past.

Also, a note on that last bit -- I am blessed with an amazingly supportive readership, not only here in the U.S. but around the globe.  Keeping my giveaways open to everyone no matter what country they reside is my own little Books Without Borders project -- and a chance to say thanks for that support.  So if you do live outside the U.S. and worry about this, please don't hesitate -- enter the giveaway, and if you win, I will get it to you, no problem whatsoever.

*A BookWish is any book of the winner's choice available for order online and that costs up to a maximum of $30.00 U.S. dollars (I'll cover any additional shipping costs involved.)

  1. I hope you're having a better day. One book that always makes me happy and provides laughs is Jon Stewart's "Naked Pictures of Famous People."

  2. Nancy Athertons's Aunt Dimity mysteries always make me happy. I reread them whenever I'm blue.

I hope things pick up for you soon!

  3. Sarah Addison Allen is one author that makes me happy when I open her books.

  4. Mercedes Lackey's 500 Kingdoms books make me laugh and are good for raising my spirits. Doesn't matter whether the characters are working with Tradition or pawns of it, I find both equally amusing. The most recent, Beauty and the Werewolf, was just the perfect blend of familiar and twisted.

What a lovely thought. I had an disappointment yesterday when I got an email from Amazon to say that Nightbred's release date had been moved to February 2013. I can bear the wait because I know it'll be worth it, but still ...

I am a big fan of re-reading and there are some books I come back to time after time. Topping the list are 2 books by Georgette Heyer that never fail to make me smile and think the world's not so bad after all. They are The Grand Sophy and Frederica. These are closely followed by Christine Warren's Walk on the Wild Side, Katie Macalister's Corset Diaries, Sarah Addison Allen's Garden Spells, Annette Blair's Naked Dragon and your own Evermore.

I am thankful for your blog and the wonderful authors you and your "posters" have opened up to me, such as Sofie Kelly, Sarah Addison Allen & Rob Thurman.

    1. I just started re-reading the Grand Sophy yesterday, for about the fifth time. Sophy is my favourite Georgette Heyer heroine, though Charles is not the top guy (have not yet completely decided the winning hero because it depends what mood I'm in). And I love Frederica as well.

  11. Lynn,
Well, although I have many favorite authors and books (yours included), I can lift my spirits just by reading any book whether it is a favorite or not. Reading a book for me is my getaway from reality. Whether I "ride" a dragon on Pern thanks to the late Anne McCaffrey or go "hunting" as a werewolf, reading is my escape. Reading recharges my batteries and lets me forget for a few hours whatever was troubling me. And I often get the best solutions to my problems after I have forgotten about them for a while. I hope whatever was troubling you yesterday is soon forgotten or forgiven. Take care!

  12. It has to be a pretty bad book to not make me happy to be reading it. I get extra gleeful when reading Jim Butcher, Rob Thurman and Jasper Fforde.

Wendy Wunder's The Probability of Miracles is making me laugh pretty hard right now.

Books that I dip into when I need a happiness fix -- the first and last Harry Potters, A Secret History (I don't know why because that's seriously sad), A Secret Garden, Will Grayson Will Grayson, and Nick and Norah's Infinite Hit List.

I have a go-to book case of favorites. Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Gail Carriger, Rob Thurman all top the list but authors like Stephenie Bond's Body Movers series and other books with a quirky sense of humor work well.

The other reading that lifts my spirits is that of my local writing and critique group's work. Those folks always make me feel better with simple acts of community and creativity. We all feel the love when one of us forgets to state that a character is wearing clothing beneath that open jacket!

I'm lucky enough to have read all the Walter books to my preschool classes for the last few years and there is nothing better than listening to 20 little ones giggle hysterically during Walter's exploits.

  46. Sorry about the lousy day! Almost any book can make me feel better, though I tend to veer towards historicals for the 'safety' angle. You pretty much know what you're gonna get, in terms of HEA. When my world is uncertain, knowing the guy and girl will figure it out by the end of the book is a comfort.

It must be contagious as I had a contract writer turn in plagiarized work today, so turning to my favorite blogs (yours and Scalzi's) make me happy. Then I find a bit of light HEA in my never diminishing stack and leave this reality for another.

Sorry you have had a lousy day :( When I need a pick up, I turn to authors that can make me laugh such as Lynsay Sands, Kerrelyn Sparks, Eve Langlais, or another of my faves like Larissa Ione, Kallypso Masters, Cherise Sinclair. Basically any that can either make me laugh &/or get lost in another world

Hope your week gets better :)
